Instructor: Barbara Boland

Barbara Boland received her UConn MG certification at the Bartlett Arboretum in 2012. She maintains several private gardens in the Greenwich area and volunteers in the Herb Garden at the Bartlett. She received her Master's in photography from NYU/ICP.

Sunprints, made using bits and pieces from the garden, have a lovely ethereal and poetic quality. Sunprints are a derivative of the photographic process known as cyanotype. Cyanotype is a photographic printing method which was developed in the 19th century and is usually identified by its blue tonality.

A short talk on direct photograph method will be given including the cyanotypes by Anna Atkins (Victorian amateur botanist), Man Ray's "Photograms" and others.

Please begin to gather and flatten natural objects such as leaves, flowers, grasses, etc. Opaque and slightly transparent objects both work. Weather permitting, we can gather from outside as well. Plan your time so that you can stay long enough in order to complete your project.
