Learn how to use the TRIMBLE DEVICE for MAPPING and GIS with Michael Sherwood

(Please note: Tree Risk Assessment class held on September 23rd is a requirement for this class.)

Michael J. Sherwood is an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist and Municipal Specialist. In his position with Bartlett Tree Company he is responsible for technology research, development, implementation, teaching and support in arboriculture with emphasis on GPS/GIS, tree inventories, mobile computing, and information dissemination.

Our specific goal is to discuss GIS (Global Information Systems) and how we will use the Trimble GPS (Global Positioning Systems) to plot trees and other valuable plants in the landscape. Plants will be GEO Coded with exact X & Y coordinates and data on each plant will be recorded using the Trimble unit. The attributes captured will include: genus, species, size, condition rating, risk assessment, potential planting sites and text box for other comments. A demonstration of inputting data into the ArborScope program will show how the field data is formatted after collection and integrated into a web hosted program for use in developing a comprehensive Inventory and Management Plan.

Outdoor class time will allow for a demonstration of the Trimble unit and the opportunity for hands on use. If weather is bad the unit will be demo'd indoors but will not have satellite reception.

Two outside class hours and one inside hour. Please dress appropriately.

FEE: Master Gardeners $60 All others: $75
MATERIALS FEE: $8.00 to be paid at the time of class for ISA/ Best Management Practices.
