DESCRIPTION

From medieval manuscripts to the great botanical artists of the 17th century, paintings on vellum are known for their rich, luminous glow.   Discover the joy of painting with watercolor on calfskin vellum.  The warm tone, smooth surface and hard finish of vellum make it an ideal surface for botanical subjects.

We will use a drybrush technique to apply soft layers of paint to indicate the subtle color transitions that describe fleshy volume.  Select simple, colorful fruits or flowers to paint small compositions.  Some watercolor experience required.

A note on calfskin vellum:  available directly from a supplier in New York state who prepares vellum for botanical artists.  Each piece is unique!  A 5” x 7” piece is $27.  You will need two pieces:  one for practice and one for finished work.  Either purchase one piece, and cut it in half.  Or, buy two (or more) pieces.  A detailed materials list is provided upon registration.

INSTRUCTOR: Kathie Miranda is a contemporary multi-media artist and educator. A graduate of Pace University, with further studies at Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts and Paier College of Art, she coordinated the Art program at the New York Botanical Garden and is past-president of the New York chapter of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators.
