6-Week Introductory Botanicals in Watercolor Class (ONLINE)

  • Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens 151 Brookdale Road Stamford, CT 06903 (map)

Watercolor is the most widely used medium for botanical illustration due to its lightness of treatment for the subject, and for the delicacy in portraying a plant’s characteristics. Traditional watercolor washes are used to maintain the clarity, transparency, and luminosity so important for the freshness of botanical subjects.

This 6 week class will take place online each Thursday from 10 AM - 1 PM, beginning Thursday, February 17. In this introductory class, we will work with simple, colorful flowers, fruits and vegetables to practice the skills necessary to apply watercolor in a predictable and accurate manner. Learn a simple 7-step approach to watercolor painting, beginning with layering washes to build rich color and form, and finishing with fine, drybrush detail.

A bit of simple color theory will teach you how paints interact; how to select the correct colors for your subject; and how to create clear, vibrant mixtures of paint. An on-going discussion of the physical nature of your materials – paper, paint, brush and water – and how they work together will round out this strong foundation for successful watercolor paintings.

Some drawing experienced advised, but not required.

Classes will be led by Kathie Miranda, a contemporary multi-media artist and educator. A graduate of Pace University, with further studies at Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts and Paier College of Art, she coordinated the Art program at the New York Botanical Garden and is past-president of the New York chapter of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators.

Guest are responsible for purchasing their own material. A material list will be provided.

Admission is $270. Bartlett members can take advantage of a 10% discount at check-out! Interested in becoming a member? Learn more here.
