4-Week Botanical Illustration Class: "Drawing the Beauty of the Plants" (ONLINE)

  • Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens 151 Brookdale Road Stamford, CT 06903 (map)

Draw a new specimen each week such as cacti, fruits, vegetables, exotic blooms, and more, using specimens from your local market or green grocer. Botanicals often display complex shapes, forms, patterns and textures that challenge the artist. Learn how to simplify this complexity in order to draw them accurately, while maintaining a three-dimensional look in your work.

Learn about proportional values; keying a drawing; and simplifying perspective to see your work advance to higher levels of accuracy. The class provides valuable insights for drawing in graphite as well as a foundation for further study in colored pencil and watercolor. The instructor shares tips for advanced graphite techniques including drawing with an eraser; using negative space for impact; and inventing pencil strokes to mimic textures observed in plants.

Classes will be held online on Tuesdays from 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM, beginning Tuesday, May 31. Classes will be led by Kathie Miranda, a contemporary multi-media artist and educator.

Registration is $153 for Bartlett members and $170 for non-members. Interested in becoming a member? Learn more.
