Walk & Talk: Successful Succession Planting in the Vegetable Garden

  • Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens 151 Brookdale Road Stamford, CT 06903 (map)

Join Master Gardeners Sandra, Stephen, and Michelle, for a walk-and-talk session in the beautiful and BOUNTIFUL vegetable garden.

Succession planting maximizes crop yield through strategic planting so that a garden is continually in production.

This means planting cool-season plants in shoulder seasons (fall and early spring) and as those crops are harvested, replacing them with warm-season crops throughout the summer.

While this may sound laborious and complex it is not! With a little know-how and planning, your garden will be humming along all year.

Bonus: Succession planting has proven benefits! It improves soil health by reducing the risk of nutrient depletion and minimizing soil erosion. Rotating crops also helps to break pest and disease cycles.
